A Tom Moulton Mix
[SoulJazz SJRCD120]
FINALLY... Remixer Guru Tom Moulton gets an "own" compilation. At least it's named after him and of course it only include a very few of the more than 4000 songs that have got "A Tom Moulton Mix" attached to them.
Tom has approved this compilation and he let SoulJazz choose the tracks. As he tells me; "The reason was there are so many songs to choose from and I thought someone objective might be able to look at it differently than me."
So in this CD you'll find some of his best works and hard-to-find gems. Just look at the track list where you find all-time classics from acts like Andrea True Connection, Grace Jones and Patti Jo. And check out the songs: "Love is the message", "Free Man", "I'll Be Holding On" and "Dream World".

Al Kent - Secret Sounds
[BBE 137ACD]
The guy behind Million Dollar Disco and the Million Dollar Orchestra - Al Kent - is back with another release of Disco filled vibes.
One just gotta love the interesting and enjoying spoken introductions, interviews and radio reports that start out some of the tracks, autentic stuff from back in the days which adds a genuine retro touch to the whole experience.
Most tracks are instrumental, but in "Come Back Home", wonderful Soulful Disco vocals are provided by Tyrone Taylor.
This release is Rockin', or more likely, Hustlin' all the way!
Million Dollar Disco - for sure!

You'll also find Orchestral Disco, lots of horns, a Patrick Adams kind of track and much more...

the Ultimate Bee Gees
[Reprise R2B 521353]
There have been Bee Gees compilations before, but this really is 'the Ultimate' one as it feature 40 Hit songs and 18 videos... It's all their wonderful music in one collection and one is constantly reminded of how many great songs they've released over their half century in the spotlight.
The first song of the first CD sends out a clear message - "You Should Be Dancing", and that CD give you ALL the more uptempo highlights of the Bee Gees long career, incl. the Saturday Night Fever tracks and other hits. It also include their own version of "If I Can't Have You", which Yvonne Elliman scored a hit with from the SNF soundtrack.
The second CD starts out with the lovely ballad - "How Deep Is You Love", which brings out the lover in you and sets the mood of the second disc. It's the perfect tete-a-tete or romantic candlelight dinner CD, it just breaths L-O-V-E from start to end.
Third disc is a DVD featuring live preformances and videos of some of their greatest hits and is like entering a time capsule for a journey back in time...

Bob Blank - the Blank Generation Blank Tapes NYC 1975-1987
[Strut STRUT053CD]
Producer Bob Blank owned the Blank Tape Studio and in this compilation we'll find just a very few of the classic works that came out of Bob's Manhattan studio.
Famous remixer John Morales did lots of his work at Blank Tape Studio, often in projects together with writer/producer Patrick Adams.
It was here Walter Gibbons made his famous remix of Gladys Knight's "It's A Better Than Good Time" (which of course is on the CD) and Bob tells in the notes about how it came about.
This compilation contains everything from Jazzy grooves to Latin vibes, Funky beats with orchestral New Wave and pure DISCO... It could easily had been called the Blank Spectrum!
The CD is compiled and have liner notes by authors Bill Brewster & Frank Broughton, who also wrote the book 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' (among others).

Capitol Disco
[EMI/Stateside 0946 395031 2 4]
This CD include various tracks from the Capitol archives as selected by Bill Brewster.
Personally I'm not sure it the CD should be called Capitol Disco, as I think it spans from Disco and Funk, to mostly Soul. But again, the term "Disco" is quite wide and can easily include several of these early 70's tunes as well.
But this is not your average Disco compilation and I would probably have expected more classic "hits" in this CD, as it features several great acts like Tavares, Ashford & Simpson and Diana Ross, along with A Taste Of Honey, T-Connection, Mystic Merlin and others.
The tracks that stands out for me are for example "Save Your Love For Me" by Donna Washington, "We All Need Love" - Troiano, Diana Ross' work out in "Work That Body", "Street Corner" by Ashford & Simpson among others, but I'm sure you'll find your own favorites among the tracks.
It will make you "Work That Body" !!!

Cocktail Disco - Compiled by Dimitri from Paris
[BBE BBECD081]
Dimitri from Paris' Cocktail Disco really takes you back to legendary 50's/60's Hollywood movies with big orchestras playing in posh restaurants and bars, or in luxury Caribbean cruise ships, but with a clear Disco touch (flavored with Latin rhythms). The earlier years of Disco was the time of the orchestral Disco music and Dimitri has managed to pick the gems in this fairly overlooked genre of Disco.
You'll get 'Big Band' Disco versions of several legendary masterpieces like Gershwin's "Summertime", "the Girl from Ipanema" (Produced by Vince Montana Jr), "Show You the Way To Go" (Written by Gamble & Huff) and "C'est Si Bon".
Some of my favorite tracks from the double CD are, beside the already mentioned ones, the 1975 Richie Family track "Frenesi", which is a very early Jacques Morali & Henri Belolo tune, along with the Bobby Viteritti remix of Ray Martinez' "Lady of the Night", Ms Victoria Burns' "Never Too Late" and "the Joy of You" by Paul Mauriat Plus (a Funky Latin gem which I found I had in my collection, but had overlooked)....
Buy it and... "ENJOY" !!!

D-Funk - Funk, Disco & Boogie Grooves From Germany 1972-2002
[Marina MA 74]
The label behind the Disco Deutchland Disco compilation is back with another wicked German Funk, Disco & Boogie grooves collection. Put in some Jazzy vibes and just a touch of Rap/Hip-Hop and you've got this compilation.
It's kind of an absurd compilation, but in a good way. Marina Records put together music from 3 decades, from 1972 to 2002 and it's lots of great stuff we non-germans ever heard before.
For example the Boney M track "Dancing In The Streets" is a forgotten gem and it's followed by a instrumental Disco Orchestra track called "Cherry Blossom" when translated, but "Kirschblüte" in german.
There's also the hit "14 Tage", a track that "Pinky" Velazquez of Vanguard Records licenced to do a english version of. And you get to hear a very different version of "Low Rider".
"Dispo Funk" by Zatopek is like a combination of Bad Manners and Madness mixed with a touch of Gypsy music - but on speed... Wicked and enjoyable!
A doze of Cosmic 'Cerrone Disco' is brought to us by Ganymed in "Future World", James Last gives us "Bolero'75" which is as far from Ravel's original as anyone can be, but it's great and uplifting. Disco lovers should also check out "Intercontinental Meetings".
Else you'll find some heavy slap-bass Funk beats along with Funky-House and organ driven tunes!
It's rough, different and great!
Check it out to form your own opinion!

Disco Discharge. Gay Disco & Hi NRG
[Harmless HURTCD086]
Time for the fourth release in Disco Discharge series, this time Harmless let's us enter the gay and uptempo scene of dance music with their Gay Disco & Hi NRG CD.
The beat is pumpin' and the sexual undertones are more explicit, but you just can't sit still to this uplifting and sweaty genre of Dance music history. Becuase it IS what it's called - High Energy.
The King of Hi NRG was undoubtedly Bobby O who is represented here through his acts; the Flirts, Oh Romeo and Free Enterprise.
Another of the gay scene's signature acts, Boys Town Gang is featured twice while Liza Minelli claims she's "Losing My mind" and Macho is chanting out "I'm A Man" (like someone would doubt that when hearing those butch male vocals).
Regardless if you're gay or not, you'll enjoy the tracks of this CD, which brings you back to the late 70's and up to the mid 80's (and beyond) through acts as; Fun Fun, Deodato, Ken Laszlo, Kano, Laura Branigan and others.
It's Boys Town music at its best!

Al Kent is the man behind Million Dollar Disco and serveral other Disco related compilations.
He has a great love and knowledge of the more obscure side of the Disco field. Through his knowledge and crates-digging he has given us a fabulous collection of unheard pearls. In other words - this is far from your average Disco compilation...
On the first CD Al has mixed the tracks together in a seamless DJ mix, and for anyone who want to mix the music themselves, then the second CD does the trick and gives you the full-length versions of these rare gems.
The music is rough, Soulful, catchy, Funky and wonderful. Simply put - a MUST HEAR!

[Azuli AZCD08]
This is, just as the album title indicates, the Choice of Classics selected by "the Godfather of House" himself - Frankie Knuckles.
The first CD includes classic Disco and early House stuff from the seventies and early eighties and includes acts like Convention, Candido, Sharon Redd, Billy Ocean and Nick Straker Band

Funky Collector - Volumes 1 - 14
[Active Music/Universal - France]
This is a great collection set of Funky-Disco tracks. It is, as said in the covers, "Original Extended Remastered Rare Classics".
Best part with these 14 different CD (bought seperately), is that it's not all the "obvious" hits you tend to find in every other collection. NO - In these CD's you'll find many of those heard-to-find hits from important labels like West End, Salsoul, Atlantic, SAM, RCA, Solar and others.
Since there so many CD's - you'll have to find your own favorites. But that's hard since there are sooo many great songs on all of these CD's.
For example CD 14 is almost a West End tribute with 7 classics W.E. tracks...
So go check them out!

Ben Liebrand has done it again... The spooky thing is that it feels like he's been taking all the tracks right from my own 12" inch collection. I think I own like every track that's on there.
As always all tracks come in their 12" inch or full length version and Ben manages to put together an interesting mix of music - from pure Disco, to Ni-NRG, Funk and Electro.
Just the fact of finally getting one of my all-time favorite tracks, the Jellybean remix of Peter Brown's "They Only Come Out At Night" on CD was a pleasure to me.
But just as the first CD starts out... Michael Jackson, WAR, A Taste Of Honey... It's like a 'Battle of the Hits' as it continues with acts and songs like "Le Freak" [Chic], "Spank" by Jimmy "Bo" Horne, "He's the Greatest Dancer", "Stay the Night" and others...
The second CD contiues with gems from Grace Jones, Change, B.B. & Q. Band, Aretha Franklin, Deodato, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jacksons and the Giorgio Morder penned Three Degrees classic "the Runner" (plus more).
Hi-NRG rules CD 3, first out the original Bobby O version of Pet Shop Boys's "West End Girls", followed by several other Bobby O acts like; the Flirts, Divine and himself. Another personal favorite is "San Salvador" by Azoto.
CD 4 gives you a mix of everything from the B-Boy classic "Trommeltanz (Din Da Da)" by George Krantz, classic Disco a la Pointer Sisters, Quincy Jones and G.Q., 80's dance classics like "White Horse" by Laidback and "History" by MaiTai over to Funky tracks by Roy Ayers and UK funkers - Level 42.

Horse Meat Disco
[Strut STRUT046CD]
Horse Meat Disco started out as a UK Club back in 2003, formed by DJ's James Hillard and Jim Stanton and ever since their parties have been known for their quality disco, both in the UK and abroad.
Now the Club feeling has been put on CD for everyone to experience. The founders along with Severino and Luke Howard have created a 70 minutes underground Disco party covering various styles from pure Disco, via Funk, Afro rhythms to cosmic Italo.
This is definately not one of the "average" Disco compilations, this is for you who like your Disco in various flavors and with a twist.
You might recall some of the acts, but you won't get their biggest chart hit but still great and groovy tracks. Just look at acts like Karen Young, K.I.D, Gino Soccio, Two Tons O' Fun, Gregg Diamond and others.

Million Dollar Orchestra - Better Days
[BBE BBECD095]
Al Kent leads his Million Dollar Orchestra in the same vain as other legendary Orchestra leaders, like Vince Montana Jr led the SalSoul Orchestra and Barry White led the Love Unlimited Orchestra, the only difference is that this is a brand new DISCO release.
With his roots in NYC underground Disco, yes - Al is from the UK but in the mid 70's he run away from home and headed off to New York, partying at legendary places like the Loft, Better Days and similar hot clubs, before getting back to Glasgow in 1978 and starting his own Disco career...
The music is heavily influenced by the Orchestras mentioned above and people like Patrick Adams (who actually also led the SalSoul Orchestra in the 80's). It's beautiful Disco music from today, sounding just like classic Orchestra Disco.
Another fascinating fact is that this album is recorded in the "old fashion" way - in an analogue studio and most of the tracks recorded in one take. Besides all the required elements are there; drums, percussion, bass, stings, organs, horns and slick bass players topped by mellow female vocals (in some tracks).
Excellent if you're into Orchestral Disco, still as enjoyable is your not!

the Real Sound of Chicago - Underground Disco from the Windy City Compiled by Mr Peabody Records
[BBE 122CCD]
When someone mentions Chicago and Music in the same sentence, most of us will think about pumping House music...
But this release have totally changed that impression for me. This is a wonderful Disco compilation, far from the House sound I was expecting when putting the first CD into the player.
This is pure Disco, but not as agressive as the NYC Disco we're more used to hear. The Chicago sound has more Soul influences and it's really a feel-good compilation the guys behind Mr Peabody Records has created for us.
Don't think I ever heard any of the tracks before, but this release has become a favorite already.
You better check this out for yourself, because from now on THIS is the kind of music I'll associate with Chicago.
This compilation really live up to one of the track titles...

Disco Patrick Presents: the Bootleg Guide to Disco Acetates, Funk, Rap and Disco Medleys
[Disco Patrick Press]
Written by Disco Patrick and Patrick Vogt.

WOW! That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I got my copy of this book and it was not only because I got a dedication in it by John Morales, who is also prominently featured for his early Sunshine Sound acetate remixes.
No, what really struck me was the wealth of information and knowledge Disco Patrick has about all these acetate pressings. This is stuff that might just have been pressed in a very few copies and Disco Patrick know most of them and everything about the pressing plants and so on... Just AMAZING!
I actually couldn't put the book down when I got it. Besides all the interesting and intriguing information the book is also richly featured with pictures of most of the releases and other exciting photos. Among things there's a section with flyers and Disco related paper ad's and similar that will keep any Disco-Maniac happy...
There are also listings of various medleys where the author even can name many of the people involved in creating them, plus that many of these mentioned mixes have most of the included tracks listed.
So if you like to know more about the early Disco music scene and Disco medleys - then this is you new Bible!
It's also printed on thick, high quality, glossy paper that will let you enjoy this book for years.

the 'Chic - Live At Budokan' was recorded in Japan in April of 1996. This was the last show Bernard Edwards performed, as he died in his hotel room the very same night.
The performances are superb, the band is just so tight and Bernard's bass playing is awesome together with the way Nile handles his guitar.
You'll also get to see Sister Sledge and Slash performing with the band.
Besides the great show, there's also bonus material with this release, incl. commentary by Nile, a tribute to Bernard and an audio CD from the concert (which is not the same as the previously released 'Live at the Budokan' CD).
This is a true 'Chic Cheer'...

Do that dance
He's the greatest dancer [w. Sister Sledge]
We are family [w. Sister Sledge]
Dance, dance, dance
I want your love
Good times
Le Freak [w. Slash guitar solo]

Finally this classic Disco movie is made available on DVD. This movie was a co-production of Casablanca and Motown and feature great Disco music from Love and Kisses (who sings the title track), Commodores, Diana Ross, Pattie Brooks, Thelma Houston and (of course) Donna Summer, who sings the Oscar & Golden Globe Award winning 'Best Original Song' - "Last Dance".
Casablanca's owner, Neil Bogart, was the executive producer of this comedy which is starring upcoming actors like Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park) and Debra Winger (An Officer and A Gentleman) along with Valerie Landsburg (Doris in the TV-series Fame), Commodores (as themselves), Paul Jabara (singer/songwriter of many Casablanca hits, incl. "Last Dance") and Donna Summer as singer Nicole Sims.
The story is centered around a Friday night at this new hot L.A. Disco 'the Zoo'. the Club will have a big dance contest and the Commodores will perform live - if their roadie ever turns up with their instruments and equipment. Nicole (Donna) will try almost anything to get DJ Bobby Speed to let her sing for the audience, which she eventually succeeds. Else there's dating, dancing, drinking, drugging - yes all elements you could expect on a Friday night at the Disco.
It's kind of a simple but yet funny movie, and it's awesome to revive the clothing and hairstyles while listening to the pumping Disco beats.
There's also lots of wonderful quotes like;
Marv 'the Leatherman' Gomez: "Dancing. Everything else is bullshit!"
Frannie: "Who cares about that dumb old concert. That's for kids. We're disco queens now."
Dave: "Oh God, you've been reading Cosmopolitan again."
Don't forget to check out the Movie Soundtrack as well...
Thank God, now you can have Friday every day!
