That was a great story Pete. Did it really happen! I believe it easily could happen, and knowing you.IT HAPPENED! I hope you had a great laugh. Deejays today are not even close to the worst of the Disco Era (except Smokey & Me). There is no emotion since it is all pre-programmed in on way or another. I remember in MYSTIQUE a deejay who would pull someone out of the crowd, show them 20 records, and tell them,"you choose the next record". Then he would not only play it next, his mix would be perfect. That is spontaneity. That is something that todays deejays would never do.They wouldn't even think about it. Way to go VJ, here is the good old days.
PETE'S NOTE:: That deejay in Mystique was, me!

It has been a lost art for over a decade now. Sure, a few good ones remain. Just a few. Scotty in LA, Little Louie in NYC, PINKY if he still at it? That is about it. Of course today the deejays don't have that great music either!!

Since I have a hard time simply matching beats, remixing was out-of-the-question. BUT..... there were many deejays who could. As the years went by, there were less of them. Every year, one retired. Or they simply stopped getting hired. Too old!! The times passed them by, they were told. The fact is, they didn't like the direction music after Disco was heading. So, it was over. The next generation of deejays couldn't match them. And the job market got watered down REMIXING????!!!! Out of the question!!

Pete, I loved your story!
Sadly, we have become a rather complacent push button society. The youngin's today have no clue what a real good dj can do on a dance club floor. As you noted, dj's today are nothing short of being jukeboxes in most cases.
If all of yesterday's dj's had today's technology, the world of music would have had a very different face to it. Disco wouldn't be a "dead" word in most places.

I loved it! Knowing Pete, this easily happened. He was the best remixer, LIVE, that I ever saw. And I seen a lot of great ones. In fact, I did my share of it too. Today, we all know, that the majority of club deejays use other things instead of actual records. I tend to agree with Pete, The art of remixing is gone. Today, deejays "create" their mixes at home, or elsewhere. Never LIVE at a club. Those days are gone.

Pete: What a great read! I don't get out to clubs much anymore but when I do I cannot believe how the technology has changed and how it all seems to be pre-done now. I agree with you in that no self respecting DJ from the day would have every played anything pre-recorded or pre-mixed during prime time at the club. I wonder how true mixing dj's of the past would do with the equipment of today while still mixing live.
Anyway, another great post!

LIVE, in person, using only records, PETE was the BOMB, and listening to those sets he mixed, he still explodes! LOL There is no more LIVE remixing like he does it. Just not done like that anymore. does the quality of the music suffer? YES! Oh, it sounds good, but today's deejays lack a few things, but to put it as simply as I can, using as few words as I can. It is missing,EXCITEMENT, that was created by live remixing. So I agree fully!

I loved that article.- In Boston, there was a young man back in the day who was ALL THAT, perhaps you have heard of him, JOHN CEGLIA. Is that the same guy who is a member here??
PETE'S NOTE:: Yes it is!
