Been reading the book "Love Saves The Day" about the orgins of Disco in NYC and I just love the quote Danny Pooch gave.
At the 7th Billboard Disco Forum in 1980 the record companys were having poor sales and were looking for answers. Our DJ 'friends' in Europe were putting some blame on the US DJs for the poor sales and were taking us to task for not promoting the music!!!
At a panel titled "Programming Today In he Club" DJs started to argue among themselves when Chris Hill, the owner of London's Gold Mine and James Hamilton, a leading British dance music commentator, attacked their American counterparts. "The trouble is that you don't sell the records in your discos here" Hill told the conference. "And there are so many ways you can do it. You can do it by talking, mixing it up; The point is that you really don't do it!" Hamilton then added: "The American DJ is to blame for not selling records and that's why disco is dead."
Dan Pucciarelli (Brooklyn Mixmaster it says) was first to respond: "We're not there to sell records. Record companies should put us on salary if we did that." (pg. 391)
Perfect Dan!!!!!!

Hey Jay, That was nice of you to put those quotes on here. Tim Lawrence left out alot considering the amount of time he spent with me. I gave Tim copies of all the press I had from the UK as well as the USA. To hell with it, it is what it is. But I thank you for your recognition. Pooch

Oh yea you are in there 3 other seperate times. You represented well brother!!! You spoke about the DJs from Brooklyn + the outer borroughs. And me DJ-ing in The Bronx from 1974-1976 before I went to Manhattan dug it!!
In The Bronx (at 'The Playhouse' & 'Act III') the crowd was HUNGRY for the new music. They would know and wait for me to play all the new stuff between 1am-3am. The rest of the time was old favorites and they loved it.
Manhattan was different & it took me time to train the crowd & adjust myself to them.

First off, I am very happy you are well. I had tried to expand on other DJ's and spread the info around. It is unfortunate that all the material writters use for their books is based in NYC. They all forget about the boros. That is a problem!!! All these writters think it was only the "city" DJ's that made the crowds dance. Only the city had clubs. Personally, I am tired of reading about the same old queens all the time. Alright thats enough, I do not want to go off here.
Thank you for your time in writting what you did.
Pooch

Another DJ I was friends with at that time was Richie Conte. He used to play in Bklyn & Staten Island. Did you know him?
We went to this FCC licence class together and used to trade tapes.
I gave him an '8-track' (yes an 8-track) of me spinning at The Playhouse. He was impressed with me mixing in the intro to Ecstasy Passion & Pain's "Ask Me" over & over to make it longer. When I visited him (I think at Harrah's) he did it for me. Flawlessly!!! He was an extremely great DJ. Have not heard of him since that time.

Jay, Yes I knew Richie. If the club you mean is HADARRS, that was in Staten Island, I know he played there. He also played in Gazebo and Dr Fellfunnys. It is a small world my friend. I had no idea you knew him. I have not spoken to him since 1980 or so. Pooch

Sept 6th Gig went well, but not as good as I would have liked. Only had about 110 people. Hot songs - Lets Start the Dance - Bohanon - The way You Make Me Feel - MJ Love Epidemic - Trammps - I Want you Back - Jacksons Screamers - Lets Start The Dance -remixed/double tracked/phased
I played "At Midnight" T-Connection - over the intro, I played Accapella of Janet Jackson - What have You Done For Me Lately - pulled it - then played Accapella of Walking On Sunshine - They went NUTS! I Loved It!! Did'nt Like - I was surprised - Judy Torres - Come Into My Arms - lost half the floor Comments - The owner told Mike (my promoter) That he has not heard mixing like that in years - to quote "He is the last of his kind", you don't see that kind of playing with vinyl anymore. He is talking to Mike about a once a month classic night. (cool) $$$$ A number of people had come to the booth to express how great the music was. including a couple of old time DJs, who stood in the booth alot to watch. It is very kind of you to ask about the gig. a tape is forthcoming.
Cheers Pooch
