Former true New Yorker here, however what was popular in my culture wasn't what was popular with the straight world.
So, from hearsay of the straight market, the most notable names that were in all the papers constantly, or the place where the kids from school were sneaking in on a regular basis with fake ID:
Studio 54
Xenon
Copacabana
Funhouse
In the gay world:
NYC
Ice Palace
Traxx
Uncle Charlies
In The Bronx:
L'esqualita
Westchester:
Talk of the Town: (White Plains)
Zipperz (New Rochelle)

A lot of the gay clubs ended up as "chains" such as Uncle Charlies, The Monster and Ice Palace. The latter being popular in Fire Island first and then brought to NYC for the dancing queens who couldn't get enough of their music fix.
Considering my age and finances at the time, I stuck with the more affordable hot spots in Westchester.

Oh heck yes! Everywhere you looked, people were jumping on the gravy train of the disco market. The question was for the most popular and those were the ones that people made it a point to make a pilgrimage to like a holy Mecca of sorts.
The thing that I didn't like about straight clubs, and yes I did go to them because I do have straight female friends too, is there was always a lot of tension in the room. The guys were trying to be all macho to impress the ladies and the ladies were usually snubbing the guys left and right. I just went to dance and I did so. However, it became really annoying when a lot of the straight guys got too drunk and the next thing you know, yet another fight broke out.
At the gay clubs, there was always a lot of posing with the buff guys but again, I just went to dance. In the male only clubs, you didn't have the fights breaking out, but when you went to some of the mixed gay clubs, the lesbians usually ended up in fist fights.
For my money, I went out to dance and get lost in the music. If the atmosphere was conducive to my headset, then I kept going back. The BIGGEST irony is that in the gay clubs, I became friends with the lesbians and ended up dancing and partying with them as most gay men thought I was an undercover cop for some dumb ass reason.

These days I am 46 and still wondering where the heck the last 20 years of life slipped to.
Back when Disco was King, you figure in 1972 I was only 10, 1982 I just turned 20. By the time I was 21 I was already in a long term relationship and the club days were behind me.
