My favorite year would have to be 1980.Some disco music seemed to slow down a bit, which sounded pleasant PRELUDE RECORDS released 12" singles like hot cakes and SALSOUL RECORDS in full swing. Independent Co putting out new labels and artists.

New bands were forming from previous bands creating a new sound for dance music. More"commercial"and Black radio airplay which was kool.(yes, kool with a k). Dj's & Remixers spinnin' live on radio such as Tony Humphries,Shep Pettibone, John "Jellybean" Benitez,Ted Currier and others.

I was only 12 then but heavily into the music.
The RAP scene just exploded on air (radio) and the entire music industry.sugarhill gang's rappers delight got radio play which people criticized or just didn't understand. Probably the first RAP single to play in the clubs. More disco tracks were in heavy rotation on the mobile sound systems.
NOTE:OTHER CHANGES FOR EXAMPLE FASHION AND A DIFFERENT WAY OF LIFE..OF COURSE THE LADIES ALWAYS LOOKED SEXY... :)
NEED I GO ON ???

I can't seperate the year's 1979 & 1980 for my favourite year of the disco era. I was 14 & 15 year's old at the time and i was spending every spare penny i had on my precious record collection.The rate of tunes being released every week was mind blowing and the majority of them were what we regard as classics today. Still to this day i find myself unearthing gems from those two year's.Below are some of my favourite tunes from the two year's in question and in no particular order;
1979;
JACKIE MOORE - THIS TIME BABY (COLUMBIA)
INNER LIFE - I'M CAUGHT UP.. (PRELUDE)
FIRST CHOICE - DOUBLE CROSS (SALSOUL)
GIBSON BROS. - CUBA (ISLAND)
INSTANT FUNK - GOT MY MIND MADE UP (SALSOUL)
CHERYL LYNN - GOT TO BE REAL (COLUMBIA)
SUGARHILL GANG - RAPPERS DELIGHT (SUGARHILL)
DESTINATION - MOVE ON UP (BUTTERFLY)
EDWIN STARR - H.A.P.P.Y. RADIO (20th CENTURY FOX)
GONZALEZ - HAVEN'T STOPPED DANCIN' YET (CAPITOL)

1980;
JANICE MCLAIN - SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE (WARNER BROS.)
THE WHISPERS - AND THE BEAT GOES ON (SOLAR)
BROTHERS JOHNSON - STOMP (A&M)
CHANGE - LOVER'S HOLIDAY/GLOW OF LOVE (WARNER BROS.)
JERMAIN JACKSON - LET'S GET SERIOUS (MOTOWN)
GEORGE BENSON - GIVE ME THE NIGHT (WARNER BROS.)
PHYLIS HYMAN - YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME (ARISTA)
SHALAMAR - RIGHT IN THE SOCKET (SOLAR)
CHANGE - SEARCHING (WARNER BROS.)

P.S
Dj Chucks..checked out your site and had great time doing it!!!!!

Keeping The Vibe Alive In The U.K.

Michael.

I believe it would have to be the early 70's with such classics as Feel The Need In Me-Detriot Emeralds, Tell Me What You Want-Jimmy Ruffin, harlem-Bill Withers

For everyone out there, you must know something. If you say anything after 1978, you are so wrong!! After 1978, DISCO was "dead" remember!! The momentum was gone, so where the great DISCO songs, by 1980 "they" called it DANCE MUSIC. So, with that in mind, the best years were 1977 and 1978. The best music came out then, and more quantity as well. Disco was hitting its peak, they were popping up everywhere, DISCO was in!! I thought that from 1974-78 was the real DISCO ERA, when the music was young, fresh and innovative. THE TRAMMPS, VICKI SUE ROBINSON, VOYAGE, CERRONE, PATTI BROOKS, DONNA SUMMER GIORGIO MORODER, PETER BROWN, THE RITCHIE FAMILY, TINA CHARLES, JOHN DAVIS, MICHAEL ZAGER, MFSB, TEDDY, BARRY, DIANA, THELMA I could go on and on. All these acts and artists were at their best. SONGS?? I won't go there, too many!!

I Think 1977 was the best Disco Year. Donna Summer was tearing it up everywhere, and The Casablanca greatness was also emerging. Patti Brooks, Roberta Kelly, Love And Kisses, Alec Costandinos, Cerrone!! Get the idea. This was a pivotal year, as the United States was discovering Disco! My favorite year> I met my future wife!!

1978- That was the year of VOYAGE, CERRONE, LOVE & KISSES, Romeo & Juliet, Push Push in the Bush and many others. It is also when I learned how to deejay!!

My friend, you can't do that, remind me how young you are!! In 1979 I was well into my twenties! 23 years old I think. And while a lot of GREAT music did come out that year, DISCO had hit its peak, and was being ridiculed here in the United States. Read the Article called "DISCO:The Term Why It Had To Go", that explains better what was going on during the year you were born!! Boy you make me feel old!!-PETE

When i call 1979 it was deliberate. My disco colllection counts thousands of tracks. Each was not accidentally saved on my collection. I read the post, then I starts to look through all my tracks sorted by year. And MY OWN OPINION are 1979! Most of tracks released in 1979 I consider the best of in genre, noticeable and significant. 1979 are peak of Disco dawn. And I take into account not only US disco.
:D

Valitrus,
I will take that, you are right, Disco "died" in the United States around that time, but, thank God it lived on in the smarter sections of the world, like Europe!! You guys kept the feelin to this day!! PROPS to you Europeans!!

I would have to say 1979 ("1979 it's dancin' time" :-)
for me this was the year i really started paying attention. I was only 12 but all my friends brothers would go to discos and I would hear the records they would by from a record shop called Disco City.
It was the year of many of my favorites -
Get up and boogie - Freddie James
Dancer
This time baby
I will survive (no eggs please folks:-)
Music man
Take me home

That being said I think three years later was far more exciting folks. I love disco BUT......1982!!!
Rap, Funk, Hi-nrg, New Wave were all married and lived in perfect harmony together on the floor. For me this was the most exciting period of dance music. People were meshing different sounds together.
Fave's from that year...
Never gonna give you up/ beat the street/ in the name of love -Sharon Redd.
Blue monday
Yazoo's stuff
Love come down-Evelyn King
Thompson Twins
Lime
Grandmaster flash and the Furious 5

all the hot labels.... Profile, Moby Dick, Megatone, West End (was still good) and the list goes on. Can we please rewind the clock so I can relive it all again.... this time doing more "chemicals" LOL
