So if he sucked so bad, and this was really him, then why they give him the credit? Because his name was Larry Levan? That is enough? If the people only knew the truth! He was not all that!

That's a very good question to some record companies A&Rs-They still making money from him without paying any royalties.

I read somewhere that some sort of Larry Levan foundation was set up by Mel Cheren with Larrys' Mothers approval.

They held parties to raise money for his family.

Maybe they also did a deal with a law firm to get approval to use his name on any future releases bearing it.

I certainly hope so.

Ok LL made more re-edits than remixes, so what, they still got his touch and that's what i like, he also produced NYC Peech Boys & Man Friday! Also i think even if he wasn't the "best" DJ, the mixs i have are far from bad.
My favs:
Inner Life - Make It Last Forever (takes me high)
Janice McClain - Smack Dab In The Middle (makes me cry)
Dinosaur L - In The Corn Belt (dark & beautiful)
Peech Boys - Don't Make Me Wait/Life Is Something Special (for the production)
Man Friday - Love Honey, Love Heartache (for the sound)
Imagination - Changes

The question here has become, Did he do these mixes too? It has been brought to everyones attention, that the honesty and integrity of those mixes is in question. In fact, I question everything that has that"Larry Levan" tag to it. His mixing wasn't the best. He got credit for mixes that he did not make. So what is really his, and what isn't but still gets the LL tag? I am getting to the point that I have to guestion it all.

I know of some producer/remixers in the 80s who are still around today who allegedly never bothered to give credit to people who worked with them.

I can't prove it though.

They were commissioned with so much work that some of that work was handed to other people to either start, finish re -edit or polish.

Sometimes these people did not get kudos. The main mixer got it all.

Even some superstar djs today that have mix cds named after them have never actually mixed those cds.

They just get paid to lend their name to the product. Sometimes they only help with track selection .

Beware the marketing process................
