I've got to disagree with you on this one, Papi.

John Davis was an intregal part of The Philly Sound, used Philly musicians, recorded at Sigma Sound Studios (in Philly) for all his major hits!!! Even the female background vocals was the same ladies Gamble & Huff used on all their hits. (Carla Benson, etc)

The first John Davis sighting was as producer & arranger of William DeVaughn's big hit: "BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT" in 1973.

Then he produced "I'M DOING FINE NOW" by New York City with Thom Bell.

In the between he got his skills learning from the Motown House Band: The Funk Brothers; arranging the strings for Diana Ross' "LOVE HANGOVER" LP.

He produced the group, Touch Of Class: "I'M IN HEAVEN" one of the first Midland International 12". It features a Vince Montana vibe break that kicks ass.

He was an intrigal part of the first Carol Douglas "Doctor's Order's" LP arranging the strings & horns.

He also did work for Phyllis Hyman & The O'Jays.

I only played "NIGHT & DAY" a little while. (long version promo 45)

When he came out with:
"RIO DE JANIERO" by Gary Criss,
"WHEN LOVE IS NEW" by Arthur Prysock,
"UP JUMPED THE DEVIL",
"AIN'T THAT ENOUGH" &
"LOVE MAGIC"
He entered my personal Hall Of Fame!!!!

Also his version of "BOURGIE BOURGIE" was NOT better than Ashford & Simpson----no freakin way!!!!!

PETE SAYS: ......while BOURGIE BOURGIE would become the definitive version of the ASHFORD AND SIMPSON penned classic........

That's not even objective.
His version wasn't even that good.
We've been playing "BOURGIE BOURGIE" by Ashford & Simpson 3 years before he came out with his soul-less Disco cover version.
I don't know ANYBODY that played it, much less would say that it was better than the original.

ALSO: He didn't start the term or style, NEW YORK DISCO.
By the time he came out with his solo joint NY Disco was already in full swing!
I leave that to Crown Heights Affair, Gloria Gaynor, Chic, Kool & The Gang,

Not that I don't like his music---don't get me wrong!
He's a Philly Soul man from way back----That is cool too!!!!
He is a DD.com Hall of Famer! Absolutely!

PETE'S NOTE:: Okay, I'll agree.
