Alright, a new thread. This one, THEY WERE BEFORE DISCO. What groups found their music played most in clubs prior to 1972. They were not Disco groups and acts. But people danced to them in 1969. I will start with one of my personal all-time favorite bands, SANTANA. With songs like EVIL WAYS, BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, JINGO, EVERYBODY'S EVERYTHING and of course OYE COMO VA. They put the people on the dance floor. And then remember one of the greatest ballads ever SAMBA PARA IT. Carlos Santana and Shelia E's uncle COKE Escovido playing percussion, SANTANA was the bomb back then. They were before Disco

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE was an outstanding song. I was not around yet. But I have been told, and I have seen pictures. From what I've been told, this song crossed all the genres. Extremely popular. He was before Disco.

I got a couple! SLY & THE FAMILY STONE were getting people dancing for years before there was Disco. Then there is DIANA ROSS, with and without the Supremes. She too made us dance. I did good!

OSIBISA---While I never heard anything by them, my deejay friends all told me that this band was a prelude to the disco era. They were an African group, who were funky and well ahead of their time. What made them even more special was the artwork of their albums, that featured flying Elephants and Dragons. They were before Disco!

Everybody should know this thread must include: JAMES BROWN, The Godfather of Soul.
The First club I walked into they played him 4 times: "GET ON THE GOOD FOOT", "ANTS IN MY PANTS", "SEX MACHINE(Clap Your Hands, Stomp Your Feet)", and "(You Better)THINK" by Lynn Collins.

I used to play "SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL" by The Stones before Disco was in full swing.
Also "RIGHT PLACE WRONG TIME" by Dr. John,
"LONG TRAIN RUNNIN" by The Doobie Bros.,and
"NA NA HEY HEY KISS HIM GOODBYE" by Steam.

All 4 are classics in my book.

WAR was 'doin-the-doo' before Disco was big:
"SPILL THE WINE"
"CISCO KID"
"ME & BABY BROTHER"
"SLIPPIN' INTO DARKNESS"
"LOW RIDER"

Then Disco was the rage and they contributed big time with "GALAXY"

All 6 of these were played HEAVY!

True that all those songs by WAR were "PRE"Disco, I consider them WAR, which in itself is an entirely different sound. They were R&R, R&B and Salsa all rolled into one fantastic group. You have not been to a real concert til you seen these guys in action. CISCO KID, ME & BABY BROTHER, LOWRIDER, FROM THE SOUTHERN PART OF TEXAS, SPILL THE WINE(One of my all-time favorites), SLIPPIN INTO DARKNESS, THE WORLD IS A GHETTO, GALAXY even their cover of GROOVIN were all heavily played in all Discos. Yet, they had a hard time recently(last 15 years) getting their music recorded on a Major label. They have been forgotten and discarded. A real shame. They were one of the very first trend setters!

Yep - love the Blue Swede "Hooked On A Feeling".
It was sung by the Swedish guy Bjorn Skifz. He's still a very popular artists and actor in Sweden and he was singing "the Arbiter" in Bjorn & Benny's (the ABBA guys) recorded version of their musical Chess.
Later in 1990 the SweMix guys did a promo only remix of Hooked On A Feeling which had an accappella version heavily used in many DJ sets. The accappella even worked perfect over the popular Techno tracks of the time...

Claes, I need to hear this! I am a big "HOOKED ON A FEELING" fan. In fact, back in 1990, I tried to do a song, yes, produce a song, and it was HOOKED ON A FEELING, it was coming out pretty good too, but then someone stole everything from the dj booth, including my tapes of that song. I never followed up, I was heart-broken!
