Does anyone know what happened to disco artist Theo Vaness? It seems like right after his incredible album Bad Bad Boy, he just disappeared from the scene.

I have always wondered if he quit the business or just passed away like so many icons of the era.

Theo Van Es (his real name) is alive and kicking, don't worry.

Theo, who's Dutch started his career in Rock bands in the 60's and had much succes in Holland and some European countries. The Shoes is the most famous band he was and is in. In the late 70's he jumped on the Disco bandwagon and I believe he made 3 albums: "Back To Music", "Bad Bad Boy" and "Theo Vaness". Theo got big in the States, got homesick, Disco was ending and returned to Holland where he formed the S Band (Pop/Rock), then reformed with The Shoes and is still active in the music biz, but without big succes.

Here's a recent pic of him, performing with his band:

Thank you Starr for that insight into one of my faves of the era. For the life of me, I never knew why his albums never made it to CD. Lord, but I must have worn the grooves out of 3 copies back in the day!

As an addendum to this post, I did a bit of a search on the net for Theo's band The Shoes.

While I did get some decent information, there isn't any links that I found to that band to sample the songs he is/was involved in afterwards.

I didn't find his voice that exceptional but his tunes certainly made you kick up one hell of a sweat on the dance floor!

The Shoes only had hits in Europe, no real classic hits. There's nothing on YouTube at the moment.

Here's a decent bio:

But they were NOT Disco, you know. Think Merseybeat, that kind of stuff.

I saw that he still performs. Would he ever consider returning to tour the US? Would there be a market for him? I loved his stuff, I am sure others do too!

At this point I would just be happy if his early work would get released on CD because the grooves are just about worn out from the vinyl!

I am sure there would still be a market for his music if he decided to throw his hat back in the ring again. Maybe not on as large a scale as before, but crazier things have been known to happen.

I doubt that there's a market for the full cd's. As for getting tracks of him on CD, you can always contact:

liebrand@euronet.nl

Ben might be including some extended versions on his "12" Inch-series.

Wow, what a great deejay he was! When I worked for LONDONTOWN ASSOCIATES, I would hire many deejays. The European DISCOS that I had to find deejays to perform. It was my job to hear and interview, then hire. They all told me about their inspiration, a great Deejay named Ben Liebrand. I heard him, he was spectacular too! A CLASSIC!! A Treasure. seriously!
