Post subject:  The Copacabana ROCKS!!

WOW!! A standing ovation!! Thank you Disco guy for the best article for, in my opinion, the best club! The Hottest Spot North Of HAVANA!!--- Let me tell you about this place. The history is amazing. There were so many incredible things that happened there before it was a Disco. And in my years there, it lived up to it's reputation. There was never a "slow" night. Only during the weeknights in the summer of 77' when David Berkowitz was terrorizing New York City was the place"empty" meaning a couple of hundred people nightly. The Mobsters who were regulars, came no matter what. No maniac with a .44 caliber pistol would keep those GOODFELLAS away. In fact, they were hoping to "meet" him!!-- In 1974, when there was a packed house for 365 straight nights, it took over 30 minutes to get to a bathroom. Seriously!!-- The Mobsters believed, and rightfully so, that if you kept the place full of beautiful women, the men and the money would follow! During those days, there was a revolving door of HOT, DELICIOUS women there every night. The Mob was into making Pornography in the 70's. so the "stars" of those movies would be there every night! And their friends, and their understudies, and the fluff girls would all go. It was very easy to get "lucky" at The Copacabana. Every now and then, I will add a story from the "good old days" at the HOTTEST SPOT NORTH OF HAVANA!!

Simply incredible! One of the very best articles on a club I have ever read. You guys out-did yourselves. Impressive! A work of art, a history lesson. A movie should be made from this article!! My wife is going to use it in her Social Studies class she says. It will be a homework assignment to her students. That tells you how great it is. I hope that those stories never end. Write a book about it!! But put more pictures, like of the Copa Girls.

Post subject:  I am not easily impressed....

Normally, I am not easily impressed.... but I understand why everyone is raving about this article. This is VERY impressive! It truly is a history lesson. I was there once in 1977, that is where I first met Pete Denis, the deejay booth was as big as some apartments. There were nearly three thousand records, and it seemed like Pete played everyone of them that night. I left after daybreak that morning, and there were still many people there. The place was full of BABES! I did not get lucky, but I wasn't trying. I think all it would have taken was an invitation to dance. I was extremely delighted in reading this article, and I can't wait to read more! There is one thing I must say, Pete, you were one hell of a DJ, but you should have been an author! You have a way with words, and a fantastic way of expressing yourself. I was always told to do what you do best. Well, Pete, I think that you do more than one thing well. As for the Copacabana, it really seems like that club was a place that never got its just desserts. It must have been every bit as exciting as any club, EVER!! Great job. Keep it up!

Post subject:  The Copacabana

Where do I begin? First, the article. Great, simply marvelous! Like everyone stated above. Second, The club itself. I used to go there as often as possible, for the obvious reasons, to get "Lucky". Of course, I knew Pete Denis. So it gave me an advantage, that I really did not need. The chicks were everywhere. The music was the best in town, just like in the IPANEMA, so I really enjoyed the place. As a regular, I never paid a cover charge, and a $50 tip to Louie the bartender gave me an open bar all night long. So I loved the place. Finally, the history and the MOB. It was like walking into a museum, then finding a Disco there. I actually was one of the few that went to the casino. Never won any money. But imagine how impressed the ladies were when they went arm in arm with me into a Casino!! The Casino was a work of art itself. Antiques everywhere, art under lights, the classiest people, and free drinks!! Who would not have loved this Club when you could go anywhere in it. It was everything you could imagine, and more. Then seeing people like Carlo Gambino and Paul Castellanos, WOW! The very best times of my life were at THE COPA, COPACABANA, the hottest spot north of Havana.

Post subject:  Talk about a History lesson.

Amazing article, it made me blush just thinking about the possibilities! Pete, I had no idea this was such a great club. And it was so well written. Discoguy, great job. One question, how on earth did the local government not put a stop to this club.?

Post subject:  This Was A Mob Club!!

Come on PL, there was/is Mob in Philly. They took care of those problems the good old American way, they bribed people! Only when Fiorello La Guardia was Mayor of New York City was there problems. They raided the Casino a few times, and in fact, there was News-Reel footage of La Guardia taking an ax to the Copa's slot machines in the 40's. But after that, the Mobsters added security systems that prevented that from happening again. Things like reversible walls, and escape tunnels. This was only a precaution, because what they really did was buy-off the investigators! Problem solved. Then all the ownership paperwork was under puppet owners, so the Federal Government could not do anything, not that they really wanted to, they loved the place, they were allowed to win in the Casino!

Post subject:  I have to put this here too.

The Copacabana. I really wish, that each and everyone of you could have been there each and every night to really experience the fun, energy, atmosphere and excitement of this much under-heralded club. Much like me, it was so good for the soul. It was so full of life, and unpredictable. Yet you always expect the unexpected there! It was such a ride. Almost five years of nightly happenings. The COPA Girls, the hidden intrigue of the Mafia and the incredible history that stared back at you from the walls. It had a VIBE to it, like it was alive. A living, breathing entity. It had a life of it's own. Guys, I tell you, you can tell me stories about every club being the greatest. Including STUDIO 54, IMPANEMA, PARADISE GARAGE, FUNHOUSE. I am sure that they were ALL THAT! Not as a put down on these clubs. They were everything that great can be. The interiors, the sounds, the fun, the stories, they were ALL THAT!! But there was always something about simply saying,THE COPA, that brings a smile to your face. Especially mine. It is something about it's history, the Mob, the stars, the MYSTIQUE of it, it was something else. I can not begin to tell you guys. This was a fully run by the Mob club, the stuff that old gangster movies were made of. Now in true form, it was mostly "low-key' but you knew it was there. The people who were in charge were not visible to the eye. But you can bet that you were visible to their eyes! And the ones who were called "management" were really glorified employees. They were "In Charge", but only the MOB ran this place. Yeah there were "owners", and "managers". But make no mistake about it, and everyone knew it. This was a MOB place. So to further comprehend and understand. Take those clubs I mentioned above, the ones that were ALL THAT! The Copa was all that too. But then throw the fact of the excitement & intrigue that that whole MAFIA thing brought to the table, and it makes it all that more exciting. One thing that EVERY STAR can tell you, THE MOB KNOWS HOW TO HAVE FUN AND THROW A PARTY! And the cherry on top, was the underling fact, that there was a Casino in the upstairs, that few knew about, and fewer got to experience. It makes it all more, than ALL THAT! The myths, rumors, violence and DANGER of The Copacabana were all the stuff of legends. Well the funny thing about legends. SOMETIMES THEY ARE TRUE!!

Great stories from the crazy heady days of The Copa Pete.

Fantastic memory too.

I too was a dj in many mafia owned clubs in Sydney,Australia in the late 70s & can identify with how the club was operated on many levels.

Glad you survived to tell the tales that will now live forever alongside the wonderful music that you & others played there.

Paul. :D

I'm kind of surprised that "Bandstand Boogie" is not included among Barry's list of hits.
That is such a great tune!!
