After much deliberation, I've decided to go with........

Candi Staton - "Victim"

It's a tale of blind love & betrayal.

Candi should have known better really; as is evidenced when she sings.......
"I told you young hearts run free,
But I didn't listen to myself,
Engulfed by the power of love,
I just fell right in, yes I did......."
Her referral to her previous single "Young Hearts Run Free" proves the point that she really "is" a victim of the very song she's singing, which makes the whole affair even more tragic.
We get straight on down to the main groove from beat 1.
The bassline & congas & an understated xylophone (which is for me is the "key" element that makes the whole track ring right), along with a gradually increasing string line, give way to the first verse, where we hear Ms. Statons tale of woe start to unfold.

After a few verses & choruses The stage is set & poor old Candi is just about ready to slash her wrists as she comes to the realisation, that once again, her man is cheating on her; but she implores you to just "ba ba dooo doo wop" along with her, as if doing that will magically wash away her blues somehow.

When she asks you to sing along, she is immeadiately backed up by a choir of voices as sublime as you're ever to hear.........but you best believe you'll be backing them up too by this point!
All of this gives way to the middle break where things really start to cook!
The main groove is repeated over & over, introducing a new instrument every 8 bars.

Up first are the wicked bass & congas, soon joined by a lead guitar, reaffirming that bassline, with added, lilting fills.
Then the magic happens.
That xylophone from the very intro joins in!
(Is it just me or does everyone fu#*ing love xylophones?)
A clavinet is soon added, as is a trumpet arrangement that seem to almost mock Ms. Staton, as they descend continually, in a muted fashion.
On top of all this, you have those wonderful backup vocals repeatedly singing "Victimmmmmmmmmmmm" as Candi adlibs sorrowfully to the end.
Fade out.

There are so many wonderful elements to this track & the original productioin of Dave Crawford, along with remixing from Jimmy Simpson make this a track to be treasured.

Ok time for the Soul-Boy to throw his two cents in with..

JACKIE MOORE - "THIS TIME BABY" (12" COLUMBIA 1979)

Probaly one of the most recognizable intro's to come out of the disco era,
What follows is a description on how I hear this track and why it is my PERECT SONG.
The track starts off with what I can only best describe as a solid mid-tempo handclap. This sound is always instantly recognizable to me, if this song is being played in a club, I swear I could probaly identify it coming into the mix from a mile away after just 5 seconds.
Next up the scrumptious bass is introduced that proceeds to give the lush funky rhthym that will be prominent for most of the duration of the track.
In comes the percussion to enhance the whole feel and we now have a beautiful groove growing. We are only about 20 seconds into the song and the tone has already been set. The groove continues to bubble and then the vocal harmony begins with "This Time, This Time Baby"
Then the quintessential sound of all things disco..the cowbell begings which is complimented by continuing percussion. We are now only about 40 seconds into the track and I am caught up in it all already, hook -line & sinker. I am now memorized by its suttle beauty.
We are now up to the minute mark and one of the most underated vocalists of our generation begins to take us on musical disco ride that we are never gonna forget! Her vocal is rich and concise, never strained, no need to belt this one out like a Loleatta or a Jocelyn. Her delivery and style, remind me of another musical heroine of mine Candi Staton. Jackie's vocal carries you through the track effortlessly.
The song is not quite orchestral to me but it is still saturated with all sorts of glorious intruments. The track is futher enhanced with a scintillating break that always gets me in a dancin' frenzy. The whole track has a tremendous feel good factor to me and John Luongo deserves heavy praise for producing his greatest mix ever for me.
I think i will wrap things up hear as I don't want to ramble on to much but I think you can now see why I think Jackie Moore - "This Time Baby" is a PERFECT SONG.
Oh!..I nearly forgot one interesting point and that is..
The O'Jays originally recorded this track one year earlier to Jackie Moore's release and I have posted it at the bottom of the page for all to hear!

About a week ago i got stuck with "Accidental lover"by Alec R Cos.
I just love songs that can combine erotism and dancing too.
The violins, the mood that tis song creates to me is make me go hmmm...
The opportunities that this song gives to a dj;this song is whispering..."mix me wherewhere u want...play with me..."
especially after the 4rth minute it gets so smooth,so erotic. That's what i am looking in a song, feelings that can create,mood...and that what makes a song into a bomb...

Great choice Cos..another classic track!
Tell me...has this just become a favourite of late or has it been at the front of your record box for a long time?..Also be interested to know what you like mixing with this track as you are dead right in saying that it cries out ....."mix me wherewhere u want...play with me..."..So you get a lot of options here to mix in what you want..what is your prefered track?
