Post subject:  A Remix that ruined the song...

Hiya all !

Was just looking for some record when I saw my 12" copy of Jane Child "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" (1989) [I know - maybe not very much "Disco" but anyway - I'll get to the point...]
I probably played it once way back because I really felt it sucked - BIG TIME. There were NO remixes on it that kept true to the original single version. I still think the single version was a good song, but I think the record label really messed it up not even putting an extended version of the single, or in worst case, put the 7" version on the 12". Instead they had 7 versions of the track - every single one in the 'Jack Swing' style by Teddy Riley. So - I was really disappointed to say the least...
OK - you might say now - what's that to get upset about, because these days they bring on people to completely trash a good song and it's only the title and artist name that might remain but the actual tunes are all completely different from the original... Yes - I know, and maybe I'm conservative but I dislike that as well. OR - let's put it this way... I think some of these remixes are really good and creative - BUT - if I like a song I might hear on the radio or wherever and I want to buy the 12" (or CD maxi) - I really would like at least one version sounding like the one that I've heard. Don't you ???

So - I know of other tracks that have been completely ruined by remixes, but maybe you guys have some good examples as well... So bring them on...

Post subject:  Bad Remix

I agree with you Discoguy,''Don't Wanna Fall In Love is better as a single, even Shep Pettibone have some bad moments like this remix :(
My all-time worst remix is ''Let Me Take You Dancing'' of Bryan Adams.John Luongo try to speed up the song and Bryan's vocals destroyed!

"REMEMBER THE TIME" by Michael Jackson was a perfectly good song when it was released in 1991.

The 12" remixes that came out afterwards were preposterous.
Couldn't even play them.
I stuck with the album version.

While I love it, the remix that DANCER mentioned, "LET ME TAKE YOU DANCING" was pretty bad! It really ruined the vocals of Bryan, and to this day, he hates this song and refuses to acknowledge it! I played it to death!!

I think the mixes that came later of Bohannon's Lets Start The Dance were all pretty bad. The original was the best. Where as the mix of Soul Makoosa of later years was actually very good.

Tavares - Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel remixed(?) by Ben Liebrand in 1985.Liebrand was a good dj for european standards but not something special as a remixer. This remix is REALLY awful

The remix by Shep Pettibone of Doctor Love - First Choice

Let's hear your opinion on that one!

Post subject:  Kiss Master Mix.......NOT!

The Shep Pettibone "Doctor Love" 12" was NOT good.
BOTH sides were not good.

I love that song---I love the original LP mix & Tom Moulton's 12"

Shep took away the soulful music that it originally had.
Not his best.

I thought the Shep remix was just plain average, which is a shame as I love a lot of his work..I am very surprised that he was happy with the finished article, especially when you compare it the rest of his body of work..

To my understanding, the master tape from the original version of Doctor Love was ruined; This was when it was time for Shep to do the mix/remix of the song (Read b/w the lines, folks!)

How do you rate the mix Delmar?

Do you ever play it?

Post subject:  The Doctor Love Remix

I used to mix it with the original version as a reedit. There were some parts both on the remix and dub versions which had accapellas. I made it quite different and straight vinyl on the one's and two's. I remember having the promo of Doctor Love 12" original version when I was playing in the 70's; Now I can't find it and I'm hurt because of it (I believe it was messed up in a flood).

My heart goes out to you Delmar. I have lost thousands of records in two separate "fires" in clubs I was employed at. I had a grenade destroy a few hundred once in 1980. I also lost a few thousand when a flood nearly ruined TUTTLES I lost classics. DR LOVE was a victim, as was the Fantastic Four, King Errisson, and, I still cry, BARRY WHITE & The TRAMMPS!!

Post subject:  "Doctor Love" - Shep Pettibone Mix

The Shep Pettibone remix has very useful parts and tools for a DJ that helps you in the mix!Is not Shep's best job, like his remix of ''Let No Man Put Asunder'' but is very difficult to make a better version than the original!

Very true George.

That why you can see that Tom Moulton did such a fantastic job on that first 12" Disco Mix.

The vocals in the break are different in the original mix from the Tom Moulton mix.

If you ever mix the original & Tom Moulton mix on top of each other you will see that Rochelle Fleming & the other vocalist are singing to each other in tandem.
Do it , Check It Out-- it's a work of art what Norman Harris was doing.
