WOW - though one... Probably impossible to answer as DISCO is most likely defined differently by different people. I really can't tell... Have any suggestions yourself ??

recently I have read that GIRL YOU NEED A CHANGE OF MIND (Eddie Kendricks) is supposed to be the first disco record
LOVE IS THE MESSAGE fro MFSB also gets mentioned very often as prototype of disco
I think the first huge disco hit was NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE by Gloria Gaynor

I always thought it was Ojay's Love train (1972) because of the Guitar riffs, the Strings and the kick drum. I hear a lot of people say that Manu Dibango's Soul Makossa (1972/73) was the first Disco song. Then again when it comes to just instruments and melodys, I would probably have to say O'jay's "Backstabbers" Just beacuse of the horns strings guitars and pianos were used in a disco way.
But then in 1972 there was also Jerry Butler's one night affair, and the Intruders "win place or show" or 1973's "I'll always love my momma".
It's really confusing when I try to think about it.
My choice is a bit earlier than 1972...
(1971) Issac Hayes - Theme from Shaft. Beacuse it has the horns, the strings, the piano's the wah wah guitar, the tempo, the drum beat, the hi-hats are in the right spot. The female background vocals. Every disco aspect combined in one song.
What do you guys think?

This is a great subject !
It's really interesting to see all your suggestions of early Disco tracks... LOTS of great ones there and Tyrell - just LOVE "Theme from Shaft" & "Backstabbers".
Mikele I think your right that Gloria's "Never Can Say Goodbye" is probably the first track credited as a Disco hit (not saying there had not been Disco tracks prior to it)...
Keep the topic alive - really want to hear all of your suggestions !

Gotta agree with Tyrell with his nomination of Theme from Shaft by Issac Hayes as the first major disco record, but what about these for your consideration:
Eddy Kendricks - "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind" (1972)
The Chakachas - "Jungle Fever" (1972)
Barry White - "Im Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More Baby" (1973)
Hues Coperation - "Rock The Boat" (1974)

Claes?? What do you think?? Do I have any idea as to what it was?? Look around this site, and you will see that I took a very "Scientific" approach to that question and gave an answer. "ZING Went The Strings Of My Heart" by The Trammps was the answer!! But by all means, read the article in this site for a full explanation. Since that time, I believe that SOUL MAKOSSA was DISCO and should be talked about in that conversation.

It was The Forbidden Fruit" I think it was 81 St. Central Park West. in 1971 or '72

I keep the popular standpoint that point to a "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1972 as the first disco hit ever. Then, Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Good-Bye" in 1973 becomes first disco-dance hit.
I'm talking about pure Disco. Not soul, not funk, not latino. Exactly disco sound.

Tell you what guys, when I first saw my Ukrainian friends post, I was going to go off. But seriously, read EXACTLY what he wrote, especially the part about "pure" disco, with no influence. His answer makes more and more sense. Those two are as good an answer as I've seen!! Great Job. He could be right. He put lots of thought into the answer, and he makes you think. I am officially impressed!!
But the years might be off, it might be LOVE'S THEME in 1973, and NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE in 1974? Can anyone tell us the years??
BUT , as DJ Jay Negron listed, WOMAN, by Barabbas could be called "pure" disco too.That was in late 1972? I am impressed by both of you! Great Post!!!

I'm not so sure about 1972. Most popular version is 1973. But for a couple of times i faced 1972 release year. Maybe it was incorrect.

Doesn't matter, you did good in pointing out "PURE DISCO" without influences of other forms. That really changes the perspective. Almost everything listed, including what I wrote in my article had influence by some other form of music, whether it be Soul, R & B or Rock. Even early Barry White was R&B or soul. My # 1 song,ZING WENT THE STRINGS OF MY HEART, was that PURE DISCO?? Not so sure anymore?? That would make it , what, WOMAN by Barabbas as the first totally PURE DISCO SONG?? If not, then it would be LOVE'S THEME wouldn't it!! So you may still be right!!- And for those who think SHAFT, WRONG, Not DISCO, R&B/POP!! Only an opinion, one of things everyone has right!
