I myself am a big fan of the practice of using samples from any musical era and using it in todays music, especially from the disco era. I think its great that we can bring back memories of yester-year and unleash it on a new audience. In some cases a new song with a sample from the past can either breathe new life into the original or the new track can actually be better than the original. What are your favourite tracks from the modern era that have heavily sampled from the disco era. List your modern song and original song that sample was taken from. I will get things rolling with these three...
SPILLER - "GROOVEJET"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_vR5aqlG4Q
CAROL WILLIAMS - "LOVE IS YOU"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muN-YGPZo18
...................................................................................
BEYONCE - "CRAZY IN LOVE"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i38JRTyMik
THE CHI-LITES - "ARE YOU MY WOMAN"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt98AbNSDZQ
..................................................................................
MODJO - "LADY"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQrcH45pAeU
CHIC - "SOUP FOR ONE"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZj-5DZn-fs
..................................................................................
Three great examples there!.....your list and comments please

Pete,
Was the track "LOVE IS YOU" - CAROL WILLIAMS that samples "GROOVEJET" a floor filler for you back in the day?........BTW.....Maybe you can continue your experitment with "GROOVEJET" by mixing in "LOVE IS YOU"

Was Carol Williams' "Love Is You" a "Floor Filler" for me back in the day? Well Soul-Boy, I am always blunt when it comes to questions like this. You are half-right. I played it for a while, it was a "filler" in between hits and "Floor Fillers"! I did not get new dancers, but did not lose much on the floor. I think that you are a funny guy. You act naive, but actually have so much of a "deejay brain", I wonder how often YOU have gotten behind the turntables? I think that "Love Is You" needed a major "re-mix". I don't remember remixing this myself. I wasn't thrilled that much by it. But, now that I know that "Groovejet" sampled it. I have a "re-newed" interest in this song. I see that you figured that out before hand, and "put the bait on the hook" to see if I would bite? Consider me officially biting!! LOL - I KNOW for a fact, that this album is at tRH, so that is one copy. Now to get a second copy, and "experiment" a little. And while I am at it, we'll see what I can create using my current "favorite" song "Groovejet". Mike, are you manipulating me? Or just using that "deejay brain" like me?? How often have you gotten behind the turntables at your work?? At home?

Pete,
Thought I had mentioned it in previous post some time ago that I was behind the turntables from around '86' to about '97' then I left the dj booth behind to get more involved in the promotion & managment side of bars/nightclubs. Never blow my trumpet about my dj history as it falls into the shade in comparison with all the great dj's on this site. Still have all the gear at home and spin still for me and my friends enjoyment. I still think I could make a living at it but I am caught in a Catch 22 situation where I would have to give up all the things I have achieved in my proffessional life to go back behind the turntables. Do I miss it?...yeah who would'nt miss the chance of taking control of room and taking people on a musical journey...but on the otherhand I am happy in my proffessional life now and I wanna progress further afield..so the days of being a proffessional dj are behind me now...but no regrets as I have this site and my disco family to keep my passion alive...As it happens..have been practicing on the decks for a few weeks now...mixing not great but getting there...always been about track selection for me...so I think I might shine in that department and hopefully that wiil counter-balance the not so great mixing...Anyway..when I am happy with a couple of sets I will post them....

No Mike, I did not know you were a deejay. Cool. Can't wait for your mixes!! As for the samples all listed above. Sure they all sound alike. But only that GROOVEJET & Carol Williams songs seem worthwhile in phucking around with. Those two are almost identical! Should be able to have some fun with them!!

Paul,
I think you have two killer club hits past and present there. I can't split them on which one I prefered....can you?

In their respective times both tracks worked the floor equally as well.
I think Armand Van Heldens track got a slightly bigger response at times because you could do so much with it due to the DJ friendly intro.
That part he samples is actually the "peak part" of Carries track so most of his track is actually elevated to that peak for the most part, giving his track more energy throughout.
Without checking I believe both were No.1 dance hits as well.

Samples get on my nerves. It is proof of how lame today's music can be. I love the originality of what DJ MEME did, but hate all this stealing, oops, I mean sampling of songs!! Can't they be original? I realize some of you see this as a compliment. I see it as lame!! In no other period in Music history did artists need to "sample" others to make music. I know there are exceptions to the rules, but I would rather play the original music. Any how, you guys seem to love it. So enjoy it!
