Hiya All !

We've been trying to figure out the location of this store called "Phil's Men's Shop".
It was located somewhere in NYC, most likely Manhattan and it's one of 22 Clubs listed in Albert Goldman's book 'Disco' from around 1978.
So the picture must have been taken sometime between 1977-1978.

The numbers above the entrance seems to say 146 or 148, but not sure about that...

Probably some Club was located above or beneath the clothing store... It's not Bonds as it didn't open until 1980.
To see the other 21 clubs - go HERE.

Someone must recognize this Phil's Men's Shop...

Come on, call your friends, do anything - we finally need to solve this mystery...

Disco-on !

Here's the address I found of an existing store. Maybe someone from those neck of the woods can call the shop and find out. You never know someone ther might know.

Phil's Mens Shop
267 Grand St
Brooklyn, NY 11211-4406
Phone: (718) 388-6214

Here's something else I found that has 146 as the street number and is around the neighborhood in question ( I think):

Pete,

This was Great (and yet sad) news...
I really was surprised no one seemed to know this "possible" Club - as (again) the Phil's Men's Shop would probably had been a kind of memorable view IF any Club would had been located above of beneath...
You didn't happen to get the correct address, as Bloomies is a full block, there are 2 Avenues and 2 Streets to choose from. But I think it doesn't look like an Avenue, more like a Street, or???
So I guess it might have been on 59th or 60th Street...

THANKS Pete for solving this "mystery"...

The mystery seems to continue...
Managed to find the address of Phil's 1908 - 989 3rd Avenue/59th Street.
I also managed to find a photo of the building (see attached) and it doesn't look the same to me... :(

Or what do you think ?

I think who ever took that picture was in the twilight zone! I think it's just a mistake in identity. Perhaps the person who thought there was a club at that location was mistaken and the club was actually somewhere else.

Hi guys !

Just got the following reply back from Phil's 1908.....

(The store picture) It is not mine. That Phil's Men's Shop was in the mid E 40's off 3rd Ave.
My family had a Phil's shop as well on 14th and 7th that opened in 1908.
The owner of that Phil's was, maybe Phil Kronfeld. I could be wrong, but many people who live in this neighborhood ask if I am the same as that Phil's.

Funny you have MECO on your blog. In the late 1970's my grandfather had a very hip 70's men;s store called "House of Cromwell" 55th and Lex. They sold all the latest disco fashions, suits, shirts, and ties. Meco was there and purchased a bunch of clothing. It was just as his new Star Wars album was released. He gave my father a few signed copies of the LP of which I still have. If you speak with him maybe he will remember.

Philip H. Pravda
Phil's 1908 Inc.

So Phil's 1908 at 989 3'rd Ave/59th Street was wrong... BUT - we got a good lead on mid East 40's off 3rd Ave... Sounds like we're onto something at least... Just to narrow it down a bit is great !!

Back again...

I knew I had some info somewhere and I found a mail from over a year ago from Jim of the Buddy Holly Fan Club who wrote;

Hi,
It might be the same Phil's Men's Shop where Buddy Holly bought clothing.
The address was 792 Third Ave, New York City
Jim Carr
Buddy Holly International Fan Club
Holly International Magazine

When checking the map for the address - it turns out to be between East 48th and 49th Streets. That really match what Phil of Phil's 1908 says... So, it seems we're getting closer and closer...
